The Boat House

Charlevoix, MI

On the west coast of Michigan, a striking sloped roof (responding to the primary residence further up on the site) adorns a small detached boat house clad in Shou Sugi Ban siding. This ADU anchors the private docks of this residence and its expansive landscape. The corner pocketing, glass doors open fully to seamlessly integrate land life and boat life on the bay. Extending from the main boathouse is a low-profile dock, crafted from sustainably sourced hardwood, its tone complementing the charred siding. Tethered gently to the dock is a vintage Chris-Craft boat, polished mahogany hull gleaming, chrome accents catching the light from the setting sun. The boat, with its elegant lines and handcrafted detailing, speaks to a timeless sense of luxury and ties the entire scene together with a nod to classic lake life culture.
